RT1431 was collected
from outdoor storage in late 2004, she had been standing outside for approximately
12 months and was just starting to show a few signs of cosmetic deterioration.

Despite this the vehicle
proved mechanically to be in great shape and drove the 70 mile journey to
Purfleet without a hitch.

En route home a brief
stop was made at Clackett Lane services on the M25 to swap drivers and check
that there were no visible problems with the vehicle at which time these
pictures were taken.

It was then
decided to race against the clock to prepare RT1431 for use on the last
day of crew operation on the 36's.

These last day events
commemorating the last day of Routemaster operation have become celebrated
events of London bus history, so a Craven RT operating in revenue earning
service on its home streets nearly 50 years after the last one to do so
was an event not to be missed.

However with so much
to do the only announcement of its possible appearance was that of a 'mystery
bus'.

Seen arriving at the
Northern terminus of the 36's Queens Park Station having completed her first
run from South London New Cross Garage, RT1431 caused a stir amongst the
waiting photographers.

Seen alongside
Ensign's RT4421, RT1431 pulled alongside whilst awaiting their departure
back towards New Cross. The upper deck cream window surrounds of RT1431
were the standard livery used on London's buses up until around 1950, when
they were removed as per the livery on RT4421. RT1431 having entered service
in 1949 would've when new worn this livery which is why it was decided to
return her to this traditional colour scheme.
